I hate to bring up something contentious or negative, but it's something that's bugged me for a while.
While I realize that not every furry is in it entirely for the sex, it's odd to me that people are just kinda... "okay" with minors joining the fandom and calling themselves furries, despite the inherently sexual nature of the fandom compared to others.
I get that teens and kids are gonna explore their sexuality and nothing's gonna stop that, but should we really just be letting them be part of something so fetishistic?
I often hear the defense "it's about identity, not sex" but that seems almost a bit more suspect to me. Taking on a fursona, a fictional character, as part of one's self-image seems harmful, especially to a developing youth.
I also hear that "furry" is a really broad term that "could mean anything," whoch is true to an extent, but I fear that broadness is used to muddy the waters and cover people's tracks when it comes to committing questionable acts as a furry.
As was made evident by the Rainfurrest incident, the only thing stopping furries from devolving into animalistic weirdos and crapping all over the place is rules and regulations set forth by the venues hosting furry conventions. They don't do AIDS testing there for no reason...
I think "furry" should be a more specific term used to describe the adult, sexual side of anthropomorphism. I'm not saying minors can't or shouldn't use anthropomorphism as a tool for character design, I just don't think they should be welcome in spaces that are so sexually-oriented.
Too much child grooming, etc. happens in fandoms, and I think we should be a little more diligent about it. Maybe I'm just a stick in the mud, though. Seems like this generation is trying to loosen up sexuality for young people.
Am I the only person who thinks this way? I'm actually kinda interested in hearing your takes on this. I havem't met a furry who wasn't into the sex aspect of it.
